Safe Travel Assurance for Visually Impaired Using Voice Assistance
Abstract
Safety is a primary concern for the visually impaired when they travel through an unknown environment. It is easy for the sighted people to travel but for visually impaired people they need to seek help from others or use secondary options to navigate. As a result daily activities remains challenging. The system consists of two modules: one module for obstacle detection and the other for traffic light identification. In the first module, an ultrasonic sensor is used to measure distance from the obstacle and the distance is given as output through headphones, the sensor measures distances based on transmitting and receiving ultrasonic signals. In the second module, RF signals are used to send and receive information about the traffic signal. RF transmitter stationed at the traffic light will transmit signals to the RF receiver placed in the cane. This will send information about the colour of light and will be specified to the blind person through voice (headphone). By doing so, the visually impaired are assisted for safe crossing of roads. The proposed system is 90% efficient.
