Comparative studies of the optimal airflows and ventilation settings under continuous resistive and elastic loadings
Abstract
In this study, three mostly seen ventilator airflow profiles, including sinusoidal, square, and descending waves, were modeled and optimized with minimum effort of breathing based on continuous mandatory ventilation (CMV). The optimal respiratory control model was employed and a lumped-parameter RC model was utilized for the respiratory mechanical system. Simulations were performed under possible changes in respiratory mechanics, including continuous resistive and elastic loadings. The ventilation settings were also optimized and the breathing pattern is derived under resistive and elastic loaded breathing. Comparison of breathing patterns between loaded and no load breathing was performed and comparative studies between alternative airflows were achieved. The results of current study have demonstrated potential innovative design of mechanical ventilator with optimal airflow and ventilator setting that tailored to meet patient's physiological need.
