3D skeletonization and its application in plant root image analysis
Abstract
This study first compares three well-known 3D thinning algorithms through experiments. A back tracing method is proposed to refine the skeleton extracted by a 3D 6-subiteration thinning algorithm. The experiments on real plant root images confirm the skeletons produced by the proposed approach have significant improvement in preserving topology, thinness, and medialness.
