Abstract

Mobile summarization is restricted to the smaller screens and the limited handling capacity of handheld devices. In this paper, a Chinese news-oriented mobile summarization system was designed, after parsing the web news page, Maximally Repeated Strings were extracted as key words, the summaries created using a Chinese synonym lexicon and improved string-edit distance were finally displayed on the mobile terminal. Considering some web pages were structured with sub titles, hierarchical summarization was applied to this type of documents in order to improve the coverage of the summarization, and a Q&A-based evaluation proved the effectiveness of hierarchical summarization for structured documents. Experiment shows that summaries created do well in conciseness, readability and coverage.
