Segmentation of touching objects using partial differential equation and watershed
Abstract
This paper presents a novel algorithm, which combines partial differential equation with watershed segmentation to improve segmenting results of touching objects. The algorithm interpolates original image by GVF partial differential equation and transforms original image to new image. The new image maintains the edge map of original image well and has good watershed structure. The experimental results show that, comparing with the traditional algorithms, the presented algorithm can segment the touching objects automatically. Also it reduces over-segmentation significantly and simplifies subsequent tasks. The idea of this algorithm provides a new direction for improving the result of watershed segmentation.
